The Iowa High School Sports Network
taps into video highlights
to expand their viewing audience

The Iowa High School Sports Network (IHSSN) specializes in bringing the Iowa High School State championships to life through television and live streaming for baseball, football, basketball, wrestling, and track & field. By using Fantag, IHSSN has found a way to broaden their viewing audience with no extra time or costs.

What is IHSSN?

IHSSN brings high school state championships to life through both television and live streaming. Since 2006, IHSSN has broadcasted thousands of events successfully to a growing audience of high school sports fans. In 2017- 2018 IHSSN saw a total streaming audience of over 210,000 viewers between football, basketball, wrestling, and track & field championships. IHSSN opens up a new experience for fans to stay connected to their favorite high school teams during the most important times of their seasons. IHSSN is mostly known for their live streaming broadcasts but they also offer the ability to purchase past games for viewing or even listening as a digital download.

I’ve been doing the social media since I started 5 years ago and I never had a way of getting any of the video. So, when this (Fantag) was introduced in football in the fall, it was everything I wanted without having to go to the event.
— Brady Fuller, IHSSN Director of Events

Challenges

Although producing video content is their business, they still had trouble easily obtaining video content to share on their social media channels. Their past social media posts typically consisted of score updates and photos. The only way to get highlights was to have someone physically attend the event, which cost IHSSN extra time and money.

Fantag, The Solution

Using Fantag, IHSSN now has the ability to capture instant highlights and post them to their social media channels without having to attend the events. Instead of only posting score updates and photos, they now have video highlights that come directly from their live streams. “I’ve been doing the social media since I started 5 years ago and I never had a way of getting any of the video. So, when this (Fantag) was introduced in football in the fall, it was everything I wanted without having to go to the event,” said Brady Fuller Director of Events for IHSSN. With the addition of Fantag, IHSSN has seen an increase in followers and fan engagement through their social media platforms, which has increased their overall viewing audience -– all without having to send extra personnel to events or sustaining extra costs. Fans now have the ability to follow their favorite high school in a way they never have before. Through IHSSN’s social media channels, they get a live look into the action in the form of instant highlights.

How IHSSN uses Fantag

IHSSN has a simple and effective process for integrating Fantag into their live stream process to capture instant highlights. IHSSN takes their local NBC station affiliate’s broadcast feed and sends it into a program called LiveStream. From LiveStream they stream the feed to their IHSSN website and to Fantag. Sending the feed to Fantag enables them the ability to capture instant highlights through the Fantag mobile app. While watching the live stream in real time, a member of IHSSN simply presses the Fantag button at any moment to grab the past 15 seconds of action and clip it as an instant highlight. This highlight can then be shared directly to any social media platform or downloaded within seconds. This can all happen without anyone having to physically attend the event, saving time and money.
